LINEOUT tactician James Hudson and new specialist coach Alex Brown are already masterminding Gloucester's set-piece strategy.
Rugby operations manager Brown will double as Gloucester's lineout coach this season.
Shoulder nerve damage cut Brown's illustrious Kingsholm playing career short last term, the 34-year-old forced into retirement before time.
Cherry and Whites rugby director Davies wasted little time in lobbying for Brown to join his Kingsholm backroom set-up.
And now the Bristol-born stalwart Gloucester lock is embarking on his new lease of Kingsholm life, with a host of different roles to his remit.
Allied to team management and scouting, Brown will help devise Gloucester's lineout systems.
But the ex-Bath and Bristol second row said former Newcastle Falcons captain Hudson will play the pivotal lineout role in the new campaign.
Brown backed 31-year-old Bath University graduate Hudson to prove a big hit with the Cherry and Whites.
Brown explained: "It's a great signing from Nigel and for the club.
"James is a very experienced and smart player, who knows how to control a lineout at the top level.
"He is one of the most respected lineout co-ordinators around, and he's already shown he will fit right in.
"I've played against James a lot over the years, and every time it was a real contest, a great tussle.
"And you always knew you were going up against someone who could control his side's lineout and make it difficult to steal ball as well as compete fiercely to disrupt your ball too.
"So that's what I am sure he will bring to Gloucester too.
"He's already made a great start, and he will take ownership of the lineout, in exactly the way the team needs.
"I am there to help if needed, but James has such a wealth of experience and expertise that he can drive that forward himself, and that's ideal.
"He doesn't need me telling him how to run things, but we can definitely work together, to help move our lineout from strength to strength."
Brown admitted he felt a huge weight of responsibility as Gloucester's lineout co-ordinator to take almost obsessive control and preparation of that area.
Hudson is similarly minded in terms of meticulous and exacting preparation, so the two ought to work together nicely.
And Brown thinks Sutton Coldfield-born Hudson can instil the same levels of confidence in the Gloucester squad as he hopes he did during his decorated playing days.
Brown continued: "It's important to have someone on the field who can take control of that area, as the set-piece is an absolutely crucial area of any contest.
"It gives a lot of confidence to the rest of the pack if there is one man who is a specialist in that area who takes control and leads it all.
"You want your team-mates to have that trust and confidence in you, that you will make the right calls at the right times, and that you will guide the lineout safely."
