VILLAGERS have been urged to rally round their shop while roadworks stop through traffic.

Resurfacing work from today to next Thursday, October 11 means the A466 in Redbrook will be shut in two stages.

It's the main road between Monmouth and Chepstow, so Redbrook Village Stores will miss out on passing trade when it is closed.

"It will affect us," said Yasmin Tyler, a director of the shop. "Hopefully people in the village will support us more. The council started work today and they will let residents through.

"We understand it's got to be done but it will make it tough for us."

Gloucestershire County Council is closing the road in two stages for safety reasons.

The north section of the road from the junction with Upper Redbrook Road to the Village Stores was closed today and will be again on Monday and Tuesday.

The south section from the Village Stores to the junction with Highbury Road will be closed today , and on Wednesday and Thursday.

Workers will be on site from 7.30am to carry out the work quickly and two diversion routes will be put in place to the east and west of the road.

The number 69 bus will not serve Redbrook until after Thursday, October 11.

The regular school bus service will collect and drop off at Bush House in the north of the village. Those further south will need to access the collection point by foot.

Councillor Will Windsor-Clive, county council cabinet member for communities, said: "This is significant work to make sure this well-used road is up to scratch.

"It will be carried out as quickly as we can to reduce the impact on drivers and in the long-term residents and visitors will benefit hugely from the much improved road."
