DEMOLITION work is under way at the former site of Hucclecote Secondary School in preparation for a new development of 53 homes. The Hucclecote Centre, in Churchdown Lane, is to be replaced by new houses ranging in size from two bedrooms to five. Developers Barratt Homes will also plant new trees and a public open space will be made available. It comes as another area of public open space in Mead Road is also under threat of being sold off by the city council. The small area could be sold for alternative uses, such as a car park, under its open space strategy. While there is no immediate threat, residents have expressed concerns that the valued open space could be taken away from them. Declan Wilson, city councillor for Hucclecote, said: "I am very concerned that this would even be considered as this piece of open space is highly valued by the local community. I appreciate that there are no immediate threats but I don't want the temptation to be there that a future council could implement." A city council spokesman said: "Mead Road open space was subject to wide ranging consultation before the final strategy was developed. It has been identified for potential alternative use and so these are being considered." Hucclecote Rugby Football Club recently expressed concerns it could no longer use the land at the Hucclecote centre to train its youngsters. Mr Wilson said: "It's going to be really positive to have new homes brought to the area but the developers need to bear the local population in mind. "The Hucclecote Centre has become quite an ugly eyesore in the area so I know a lot of people will be happy to see the land developed." Tony Palmer, construction director of Barratt Homes, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by demolition works and we will continue to work with local residents to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum."
