MASKED robbers brandishing a large knife stole cash and cigarettes from an off licence in a quiet residential neighbourhood.

A police dog was used to try to track down the two men who both had their heads covered when they burst into the store, pushing a female worker aside in the process.

The incident happened at Glevum Wines, in Oxstalls Lane, Longlevens. The men went into the off licence at 9.35pm on Thursday with what police described as a 'large carving knife' before leaving with the loot.

The woman was unharmed, although she was left very shaken up.

Drew Stephens shops in the store regularly. He said: "It must have been a horrible ordeal for the woman, I hope the police catch whoever did it."

Samantha Hughes, who also visits the store, said: "It sounds awful.

"I'm glad no-one was hurt, it could have been a lot worse."

Another Oxstalls resident, who wished to remain anonymous, added: "It's a lovely little store but it did occur to me the last time I was in just how much of a soft target for criminals it would be because it is open so late at night."

The men, who are still on the run, made off along Oxstalls Way and it is believed they ran through the University of Gloucestershire campus.

The first offender is described as male, around 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build, wearing a dark hooded top, tracksuit bottoms and a woollen hat pulled down over his face with small slits cut into it.

The second is described as male, 5ft 5ins tall, of slim build, wearing a dark hooded top and navy tracksuit.

A forensic investigation was carried out at the shop, while detectives are looking at CCTV footage. Police dogs have also been at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "The impact of a crime like this on the staff member who has to deal with it can be very pronounced. In this case, the victim has suffered a horrible ordeal but nonetheless managed to give us as much information she possibly can.

"There could be someone in the community who knows something about this and we would urge them to search their conscience, do the right thing and come forward." Anyone with information is urged to call 101.
