Q: Some years ago I bought Hodgson jumpers which were a nice fine, good quality wool. They have gone out of business and I can't find anything to compare with them. Any ideas?
A: I have to admit Hodgson wasn't a brand I had come across, but until seven or eight years ago they produced beautiful classic merino and lambswool knits. When their founder retired, the name and production switched to Peter Scott who have been producing fine knitwear since 1878. This beautiful argyle V-neck, £120, is from their spring-summer collection at www.lochcarron.com.
Another fine Scottish knitwear producer is Brora. This cashmere Fairisle is in their sale reduced from £289 to £209 from www.brora.co.uk or their Bath store.
Merino wool is a favourite of mine and makes a lovely light knit. This tobacco cowl neck from LK Bennett is in their sale at £75 reduced from £115. It also comes in champagne, antique rose and purple.
Jaeger is always worth a look for great classic knitwear as well as some more fashion-forward pieces such as this stunning intarsia cashmere, now £140 reduced from £180.
Q. My birthday is later in January and my husband and parents will give me some money to spend. I find it difficult to know what to buy as the sales are coming to an end and spring hasn't really got started. What would you suggest?
A: Isn't it typical? The one time of year you actually have some cash to splash and the shops let you down – or do they?
If you search carefully among the sale rails there are some great pieces to be found.
Look for things which will fit seamlessly alongside the forthcoming spring trends. This Nicole Fahri dress from Foundation in Montpellier, Cheltenham, is now half price at £175 and features gorgeous yellow splashes – a key colour for spring and summer.
Zara has a fabulous selection of coats in their sale which will enable you to segue effortlessly from winter to spring. This short military-style coat is now £99.99 from £119. The dark navy would sit beautifully against all of the pops of colour coming through, especially hot pink and yellow.
Or why not use the opportunity to invest in a colourful tote which will add a colour pop to your basics all summer long? This gorgeous tote from Anya Hindmarch has been reduced by 40 per cent and is now £330 from www.matchesfashion.com or this cobalt blue one from Russell and Bromley is £210. Happy birthday!
